Russia and Ukraine traded fresh missile and drone strikes on Saturday amid the resumption of US-mediated peace talks in Miami, which continued on Sunday.
Russian attacks crippled Ukrainian energy infrastructure, coming a week after Kyiv targeted Russian energy facilities. Ukrainian officials reported recovering dozens of bodies from the rubble of a building hit in Russian drone strikes.
Dozens were killed on both sides over the weekend while negotiations were underway. The latest exchanges occurred as negotiators from both countries discussed potential ceasefire terms to end the war in Ukraine.
The talks, which began on Saturday and resumed on Sunday, aim to refocus global attention on ending the conflict in Ukraine, even as much of the world remains fixed on the ongoing war in the Middle East.
Governor of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, Ivan Fedorov, confirmed that at least eight people were killed and 11 were injured in strikes across northern Chernihiv and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts.
Meanwhile, Russian Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reported that at least two people were killed and one was injured in Ukrainian shelling of the Belgorod border region.
The current round of negotiations is being chaired by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law.
Witkoff described the discussions as “constructive”, stating they form “part of ongoing mediation efforts, with discussions focused on narrowing and resolving remaining items to move closer to a comprehensive peace agreement.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a post on X, called the talks “important for the whole world”, adding that the teams “will continue discussion” on Sunday.
"The key issue is to understand how ready Russia is to move toward a real end to the war—honestly and with dignity—especially now, when geopolitical tensions have increased due to the situation around Iran,” he wrote.
