A new memorial honouring the victims and heroes of the 9/11 terror attacks was unveiled in Chesterfield, New Jersey, on September 11. This initiative was led by Sewa International’s South Jersey Chapter, in partnership with Chesterfield Township, and serves as a powerful tribute to those affected by the tragic events of 9/11.
The ceremony was attended by over 350 people, including local officials, state senators, assembly members, and first responders, reflecting the deep sense of community and unity that the event aimed to foster.
The memorial consists of three key monuments, each symbolising a significant part of the attack: the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and Flight 93. These structures serve as a reminder of the lives lost and the heroism displayed in the face of unprecedented tragedy.
According to a press release by Sewa International, the memorial was completed in just 23 days, a remarkable achievement made possible by the generosity of donors and sponsors.
The swift completion highlights the collaborative efforts of veterans, first responders, township officials, environmental and historical commissions, interfaith groups, Sewa volunteers, and local businesses.
Lt. Col. Eric J. Tolska, who played a vital role in the 9/11 rescue efforts, delivered the keynote address. His reflections on the courage and challenges of that day deeply resonated with those present.
He emphasised the resilience shown in the aftermath of the attacks and the importance of remembering the sacrifices made. His speech served as a powerful reminder of the bravery of first responders and the enduring strength of the American people.
State Senator Latham Tiver spoke at the event, urging the audience to embody values of care and pride in their everyday lives. He emphasised that the lessons learned from 9/11 are not just about remembrance, but about taking action to ensure a kinder, more united future.
Assemblywoman Andrea Katz echoed this sentiment, calling on everyone to reconnect with each other and to show kindness as a way of honouring the victims. She stressed the need for communities to come together in solidarity, not just during times of tragedy but as a continuous effort to build a better society.
Mayor Matthew Litt also expressed his gratitude for the memorial, noting that it would serve as a lasting space for reflection and unity. He acknowledged the efforts of everyone involved in making the memorial a reality and pointed out how it represents the community's ability to come together in the face of adversity.
For Litt, the memorial is more than just a physical structure; it is a symbol of the town's commitment to remembering the past while fostering hope for the future.
Sewa International's South Jersey Chapter played a key role in the memorial’s creation. Sandesh Kamath, the Chapter Coordinator, expressed that the memorial stands as a testament to the power of unity and collaboration.
“When we come together, work together, and support one another, nothing is beyond our reach,” he stated. His words captured the spirit of collective action that was evident throughout the event and mirrored the collaborative efforts that made the memorial possible.
Sridhar Talanki, a board member of Sewa International USA, further highlighted the significance of collective action in shaping a better future. He spoke about the potential to build a society where every citizen has the opportunity to reach their full potential. The unveiling of the memorial took place on the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a somber day that continues to hold deep significance for people across the United States. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives on that day, making it the deadliest terror attack in U.S. history.
Two of the four planes hijacked by Al Qaeda terrorists crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, while another plane struck the Pentagon.
The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a field in rural Pennsylvania after passengers courageously fought back against the hijackers, preventing an even greater catastrophe.
