Iranian authorities on Tuesday confirmed the death of over 50 people after the huge explosion that took place in the southern port of Shahid Rajaee, reports said.

Iranian government official Fatemeh Mohajerani revised the death toll from 26 to 57 people killed, and said 1,581 others were injured following the strong explosion that occurred in Shahid Rajaee port.

The same official confirmed that at least 11 more people are reportedly missing in the blast that took place on April 26.

On the other hand, Iranian authorities arrested two, including a government official with links to the deadly blast last month, according to the country’s main commercial port, state television reported last Sunday.

"A government manager and another from the private sector have been arrested,” state television revealed, citing a report from the investigating committee.

Nonetheless, an explosion took place in the city of Mashhad in Iran, causing a huge fire, social media reports revealed on Sunday, causing a massive fire and black smoke.

The judiciary on Sunday said the toll had been revised because “it was determined that some of the bodies considered separate were one body,” adding that it could still change.

At the time of the blast, Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni blamed “shortcomings, including non-compliance with safety precautions and negligence.”

Shahid Rajaee is near Iran’s coastal city of Bandar Abbas on the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway through which one-fifth of global oil output passes.

It said that “suspects have been identified and the summoning process is underway,” without elaborating.
