Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday welcomed the peace agreement between the United States and Iran. He praised US President Donald Trump and Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei for helping restore peace in West Asia and said the two sides had signed the "historic" Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
Sharif also commended the leaders of both countries for choosing diplomacy and supporting peace. He said the agreement would lead to the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the US naval blockade.
Trump signed the memorandum at the Palace of Versailles in France on Wednesday after meeting French President Emmanuel Macron following the G7 summit. Shortly afterwards, Iranian media released photographs showing President Masoud Pezeshkian holding a copy of the signed agreement.
Reports suggest that Pakistan, which played a major role in mediation efforts, will formally sign the memorandum during a ceremony scheduled in Switzerland on Friday.
Speaking on Thursday, Sharif said the deal reflected the strong commitment of both governments to resolve the conflict through dialogue. He also thanked countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkiye and Egypt for their support during the peace process.
"I am honoured to announce that the historic Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has been electronically signed today between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran," Sharif wrote in a post on X.
He said the agreement would take effect immediately. According to Sharif, Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz at once, while the United States would remove its naval blockade. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important shipping routes for oil and energy supplies.
Sharif extended his congratulations to Trump and thanked him for supporting a peaceful solution. He said diplomacy had helped prevent a conflict that could have had serious consequences for the region and the wider world.
He also praised the efforts of the US negotiating team, including Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner, for helping secure the agreement.
Sharif expressed appreciation for Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian. He credited them with showing wisdom and leadership in choosing the path of peace.
He also recognised the work of Iran's negotiating team, including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. He said their patience and commitment played a key role in finalising the deal.
Sharif further thanked the leadership of Qatar for its constructive role in helping move the talks forward. He also praised Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Egypt for their important contributions to the peace effort.
The Pakistani prime minister also acknowledged the role of Pakistan's Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir. He said Munir's dedication and efforts were crucial in helping achieve the breakthrough and promote regional stability.
The peace negotiations were carried out with the help of mediators, including Pakistan and Qatar. The two countries had earlier helped secure a two-week ceasefire agreement on April 8, which was later extended to allow talks to continue.
