At least 50 people were killed after two high-speed trains collided in Spain on Wednesday, with human error suspected as authorities began investigating the crash. Several carriages fell down an embankment near Toledo, prompting a large-scale rescue and medical response.

The accident occurred shortly after 9 am local time near the towns of Mora and Orgaz. The trains, operated by Renfe and Iryo, were travelling on the Madrid-Seville route. Two coaches of the Iryo service derailed in the impact.

Esther Padilla, spokesperson for the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, said 147 people, including a baby, were aboard the Iryo train, while the Renfe service was carrying 397 passengers.

Firefighters and medical teams were deployed to the site, and hospitals in Toledo, Alcazar de San Juan and Ciudad Real were placed on alert to receive casualties. Local authorities also prepared emergency facilities, including a sports hall, for passengers and injured people.

Adif said traffic on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed corridor had been halted after what it described as a rear-end collision between the two trains. Images from the site showed damaged coaches lying on their sides in a ditch, with debris scattered across the area. One carriage was also seen stranded on an elevated section of track, while twisted metal and broken panels covered the embankment below.

Manuel Galan, mayor of nearby Urda, said the local council had been asked to ready emergency accommodation and support facilities. The cause of the collision remained under examination as rescue operations continued.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he was shocked by the incident and was in contact with the transport minister and the Castilla-La Mancha regional government. He offered his “affection, solidarity, and support” to the victims and their families.

Sanchez cancelled his scheduled engagements for Wednesday. Spain’s opposition People’s Party also cancelled all campaign events following the crash.

The collision occurred nine months after another fatal accident on the same railway line. In January, 46 people died near Adamuz in Cordoba province when an Iryo train derailed and struck an approaching Renfe service. That disaster led to renewed debate over investment in railway infrastructure and maintenance.
