Trudeau discusses Trump tariffs in virtual meeting with premiers.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has urged caution regarding the tariff threat made by incoming US President Donald Trump, asserting that such declarations should be taken seriously.

Trudeau, speaking during a visit to Prince Edward Island, made it clear that Trump’s threats were not mere rhetoric and that he intended to follow through with his plans.

Trudeau emphasised that the consequences of Trump’s proposed tariffs would be far-reaching, warning that they would not only harm Canadian businesses but would also drive up prices for American consumers.

The impact would extend beyond Canada, affecting US industry and businesses as well. Trudeau’s remarks came as part of ongoing discussions about how Canada should approach its relationship with the incoming US administration, particularly in the context of trade.

The Canadian government is already taking steps to prepare for the potential challenges posed by Trump's tariff threats. Trudeau held a virtual meeting with the country's 13 premiers to address the situation.

The discussions focused on how best to approach the issue and communicate Canada's position effectively to the US. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland also called on provincial leaders to leverage their contacts and networks to ensure that key messages were conveyed to influential Americans.

Both Trudeau and Freeland agreed that Canada should continue working closely with the US, particularly considering the strong economic ties between the two countries. These ties have driven prosperity on both sides of the border, spanning multiple sectors of the economy.

Despite the challenges posed by Trump's stance, Canada is committed to advocating for its interests and ensuring that the economic relationship remains strong.

Trump's tariff threat is aimed at imposing a 25 per cent levy on all goods from Canada and Mexico once he takes office. He has stated that these tariffs would remain in place until both countries take action to curb the flow of illegal drugs and immigrants into the United States.

For Canada, this presents a significant concern, as the country exports over $300 billion worth of goods to the US each year, making it one of Canada's most important trading partners.
