US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he has ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned near Russia in response to remarks by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, which he described as “foolish and inflammatory”.
“I have ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
Medvedev, who now serves as the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, had referenced Moscow’s Cold War-era “Dead Hand” system — an automatic nuclear launch mechanism designed to retaliate in the event that the Soviet Union, or present-day Russia, were attacked and its leadership incapacitated.
The exchange came after Trump imposed a 25 percent tariff on India over its continued purchase of Russian energy.

The move prompted Medvedev to respond on Telegram, taking aim at the US President’s comments about the “dead economies” of Russia and India and mocking Trump to “recall his favourite movies about ‘the walking dead’ and remember how dangerous the so-called ‘Dead Hand,’ which doesn't even exist, could be.”
In the same Truth Social post, Trump responded sharply to Medvedev’s warning, saying, “Tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he’s still President, to watch his words. He’s entering very dangerous territory!”
The warning from Medvedev followed the US decision to shorten a ceasefire deadline with Ukraine from 50 days to just 10–12 days, with Moscow threatening “secondary tariffs” if the new timeline was not met.
Trump’s deployment order comes amid rising tensions between Washington and Moscow, as well as new trade frictions with New Delhi.
