United States President Donald Trump has said that the deal to end the Gaza war and release the hostages remaining in Hamas captivity could be agreed upon soon.

US weighs Gaza deal as Trump meets Netanyahu on Monday.

United States President Donald Trump has said that the deal to end the Gaza war and release the hostages remaining in Hamas captivity could be agreed upon soon.

Trump said at the White House that "it's looking like we have a deal on Gaza." He said, "I think it's a deal that gets the hostages back; it's going to be a deal that ends the war.”

Yet, he did not provide any specificity on how he was going to make the deal happen after several failed attempts. Trump is due to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday.

Things have somewhat turned after the Saudi-Pakistan defence agreement, which saw the two nations securing a joint defence pact earlier this month. The deal has severed the ties between Saudi Arabia and its long-time security guarantor, the United States, fearing the move could pose a threat to Israel’s regional ambitions.

Washington has started piling up more pressure on the Netanyahu government in recent days, which was reflected in Trump’s latest statement, in which he was quoted as saying, “I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank.”

This week, US special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff said his country has circulated a ceasefire proposal to officials of the Muslim majority nations, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Indonesia and Pakistan, who were gathered in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

The latest ceasefire proposal envisions the release of all hostages, with no more military actions on the part of the other Middle Eastern countries, including Qatar, and a fresh dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians to agree on "peaceful coexistence".

Netanyahu has rejected the establishment of the Palestinian state as madness and suicide for Israel. However, he was addressing almost an empty house at the UNGA since the majority of the member states walked out and booed his country’s actions in Gaza.

Israel’s war on Gaza has killed more than 65,300 people and injured more than 150,000 people since October 2023.
