Three killed and thousands displaced as Kajiki hits Vietnam.

As many as three people were killed and thousands displaced in Vietnam after Typhoon Kajiki made landfall on Monday, destroying homes, disrupting power supplies, and damaging other critical infrastructure.

Flash floods brought chaos to the streets of the capital, Hanoi, on Tuesday.

The typhoon struck the central part of the country on Monday with winds reaching up to 130 km/h (80 mph), ripping the roofs off thousands of homes and knocking out power to more than 1.6 million people.

Vietnam, owing to its geography, has long been vulnerable to seasonal typhoons, though human-driven climate change is making them increasingly frequent and deadly.

Authorities reported that around 27 mountainous villages were completely cut off from the mainland, while 44,000 people were evacuated as the typhoon hit.

Further north in Hanoi, heavy rainfall left many streets submerged, causing traffic chaos on Tuesday morning.

After striking Vietnam and weakening into a tropical depression, Kajiki moved westwards over northern Laos, bringing torrential rain.

Reports on Tuesday suggested that Laos’ high-speed railway suspended all operations due to the severe weather. Authorities also announced the closure of several roads that had been washed away by floodwaters.

In Vietnam, more than 100 people have been killed or reported missing due to natural disasters in the first seven months of 2025, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

In September last year, Typhoon Yagi, which battered northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar, killed more than 700 people and caused billions of dollars in economic losses.
