US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday extended greetings to Pakistan on the occasion of its Independence Day, expressing Washington’s appreciation for Islamabad’s cooperation in counterterrorism and trade.

In a statement, Rubio said the United States valued its partnership with Pakistan in key areas. “The United States deeply appreciates Pakistan’s engagement on counterterrorism and trade. We look forward to exploring new areas of economic cooperation, including critical minerals and hydrocarbons, and fostering dynamic business partnerships which will promote a prosperous future for Americans and Pakistanis,” he said.

Pakistan marks its Independence Day on August 14, commemorating the creation of the country in 1947 as a separate nation for Muslims, following the partition of British India.

BLA declared a terrorist organisation

Earlier this week, the United States formally designated the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its alias, the Majeed Brigade, as foreign terrorist organisations.

The US State Department also placed the Majeed Brigade under the “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” category, according to a statement issued by Secretary of State Marco Rubio on August 11.

The designation aligns with Pakistan’s long-standing calls for the group’s international proscription. The BLA, active in the resource-rich province of Balochistan, has been involved in multiple attacks and is considered one of the most prominent banned outfits in the country.

The move comes shortly after Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir’s visit to the United States and amid recent developments in Pakistan-US relations under President Donald Trump’s administration.

It also coincides with Washington’s commitment to invest in Pakistan’s energy and mineral mining sectors, with Balochistan expected to be a focal point for such projects.

Counterterrorism cooperation reaffirmed

Pakistan and the United States recently held a counterterrorism dialogue in Islamabad, where both countries reaffirmed their shared commitment to combat militancy.

According to a joint statement issued by Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, the US commended Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts during the meeting. The dialogue was attended by Gregory D LoGerfo, the US State Department’s Acting Coordinator for Counterterrorism.
