The United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, recently held a phone call with Israel’s Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant, reinforcing America’s stance against Israel's proposed major military operation in Rafah city of Gaza. Blinken emphasised the urgent need to protect civilians during the conflict.
According to the US State Department spokesperson, Mathew Miller, Blinken reiterated the US commitment to Israel’s security while expressing opposition to the military ground operation in Rafah, a city with over one million residents seeking shelter.
Blinken stressed the importance of safeguarding civilians and aid workers in Gaza, urging Israel to facilitate the movement of assistance and address distribution challenges amidst targeting Hamas.
As tensions escalate, Israeli military tanks have advanced deeper into the Jabalia refugee camp. This move comes amid ongoing clashes between Hamas militants and Israeli forces. The residents of the camp, previously displaced during military incursions, now face renewed displacement amidst the ongoing offensive.
Reports indicate that Palestinians in various parts of Gaza, including Jabalia, Beit Lahiya, and Rafah, have been forced to evacuate. However, the Palestinian Civil Defence has cited challenges in responding to assistance requests due to the intensity of the conflict.
In Rafah, residents were instructed to evacuate to designated areas, including the overcrowded "humanitarian zone" of al-Mawasi. Israel has issued evacuation orders to Palestinians in Gaza, including critically ill patients, with limited clarity on instructions.
The situation remains tense as both sides navigate the complexities of the conflict. The recent communication between Blinken and Gallant underscores international efforts to mitigate civilian casualties and ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need amidst the ongoing violence.
