As Donald Trump prepares to become the 47th President of the United States in January, Indian students and professionals in the US face uncertainty. Several major American universities have advised international students to return to the country before Trump’s inauguration on January 20, fearing potential travel restrictions.

President-elect Trump has announced plans to implement new executive orders on his first day in office, focusing on immigration and economic policies. This has raised concerns about possible disruptions, similar to those seen during his first term in 2017, when nationals from seven predominantly Muslim countries were hit with an immediate travel ban.

The University of Massachusetts, Amherst, issued a notice advising international students and staff to return before January 20. It highlighted the possibility of sudden policy changes based on experiences from 2017.

Wesleyan University shared similar guidance, with its Office of International Student Affairs recommending students be in the US by January 19 to avoid re-entry issues.

At MIT, Associate Dean David Elwell warned students to carefully plan their travel, citing potential delays in visa processing and the risks of being abroad during policy changes. He reminded students that transitions in government often lead to new rules affecting immigration and education.

These warnings have struck a chord with Indian students, many of whom remember the difficulties caused by Trump’s 2017 travel ban. That order disrupted lives, led to protests, and created uncertainty about US immigration policies.

Universities are taking steps to support their international students. Yale University recently hosted a webinar to address concerns about possible changes in immigration rules, while other schools are preparing to challenge policies that might affect students.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has not issued an official advisory but has urged Indian nationals in the US to stay informed about travel regulations.

The US remains the top destination for Indian students, with India surpassing China in 2023/2024 to become the largest group of international students in the country.

Over 331,000 Indian students were enrolled in American universities, a 23% increase from the previous year, showing their significant role in the US academic system.
