US Vice President JD Vance has said that the upcoming talks between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin would not “make anybody super happy,” referring to both sides in the Ukraine war.
Vance said, “Both sides of the conflict would probably end up being unhappy with it.”
He added that the US president is keen on settling the Ukrainian issue through a “negotiated settlement where both sides could live peacefully alongside each other with no more killings.”
Vance noted that one of the major diplomatic hurdles has been overcome with the President of the United States securing a key direct, face-to-face meeting with the Russian president.
Putin has also agreed to hold direct talks with the Ukrainian leader, which he had sought since the beginning of the ongoing peace talks in Istanbul.
The US is now working to finalise a “tri-nation” meeting between “Putin-Trump-Zelensky” after the upcoming meeting in Alaska is over.
When asked about his opinion on Zelensky meeting Putin before he meets Trump, Vance replied, “I don’t think it would be productive or positive.”
“I think fundamentally the President of the United States has to be the one to kind of bring these two together,” he said.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, Putin said that he has nothing against a tri-nation meeting including Zelensky, but some favourable conditions need to be in place before these talks could materialise.
There are unconfirmed reports that the White House may invite the Ukrainian leader to Alaska on 15 August for talks between Putin and Trump.
