Over 5,00,000 to be moved as Typhoon Kaiji approaches.

The Vietnamese authorities are preparing to evacuate more than 5,00,000 people to safer locations as Typhoon Kaiji is expected to make landfall soon, officials said.

The typhoon, according to experts, has reached wind speeds of up to 175 km/h and may hit land in the coming days.

Authorities on Monday ordered more than 150,000 households in Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri, Hue and Danang to seek shelter further inland.

Flights bound for these provinces have also been cancelled amid the severe weather conditions.

According to the US Joint Typhoon Warning Centre, Kaiji was travelling across the South China Sea with wind speeds of 175 kilometres per hour (109 miles per hour). It said the storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall, which could cause flooding in affected areas.

The typhoon may make landfall at around 1 p.m. local time on Monday (0600 UTC), with winds reaching 157 km/h before impact.

The country also suffered heavy losses of up to $3.3 billion (€2.82 billion) when Typhoon Yagi struck coastal parts of Vietnam.

Beyond Vietnam, China’s tourist city of Hainan Island has also issued evacuation orders for more than 20,000 residents living near coastal areas.

A social media post by the city urged residents not to go out unless necessary. Strong winds have also hit nearby parts of Guangdong province.
