The United States has expressed approval of steps taken by India and China to reduce tensions along their shared border, specifically welcoming recent troop disengagement from key friction points in eastern Ladakh.

Acknowledging the progress, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller remarked that Washington “welcomes any reduction in tensions along the border” and confirmed that the US has been kept informed of developments by New Delhi.

“We are closely following the developments between India and China,” Miller stated in his daily press briefing on Tuesday.

“We understand that both countries have taken initial steps to withdraw troops from friction points along the Line of Actual Control. We welcome any reduction in tensions along the border,” he added.

Responding to a question, Miller clarified that the United States had no direct role in the India-China resolution process.

“We have talked to our Indian partners and been briefed on it, but we did not play any role in this resolution,” he explained.

According to official sources in India, the disengagement process is in its final stages, with troop withdrawal occurring at two major friction points, Demchok and the Depsang Plains, following a significant agreement between the two nations.

Initial negotiations took place at the diplomatic level and were later formalised through military talks.

Sources noted that the “framework was signed first at the diplomatic level,” with further terms agreed upon during Corps Commander-level discussions.

Indian Army sources, speaking on 25th October, indicated that the disengagement process was expected to conclude by the end of the month, likely between 28th and 29th October.
