Xi Jinping reshapes Politburo, breaking party norms.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has unexpectedly reshuffled two key Politburo positions, marking a rare departure from long-standing political norms. Analysts view this as a calculated move to strengthen his control ahead of the 2027 Communist Party Congress.

For the first time, Xi has switched roles between two senior Politburo members, Li Ganjie and Shi Taifeng, according to a report by the local Chinese media.

The reshuffle affects the leadership of the Organisation Department and the United Front Work Department—both crucial entities overseeing internal promotions and external political influence.

This move is seen as part of Xi’s broader strategy to consolidate power by eliminating potential rivals and reinforcing his grip over the party’s key functions.

Despite a decade-long anti-corruption campaign, Xi continues to warn that corruption remains the Communist Party’s “biggest threat.”

Even loyalists are not exempt from scrutiny, creating an atmosphere of fear that discourages dissent but could also slow decision-making at a time when China is grappling with economic and geopolitical challenges.

The reshuffle has raised speculation about Xi’s long-term plans and the stability of his leadership. While some analysts interpret it as a demonstration of his strength, others see it as an indication of internal resistance within the party.

According to SCMP, 60-year-old Li Ganjie, an expert in nuclear safety and environmental policy, now leads the United Front Work Department. He is currently the youngest member of the 24-member Politburo.

Meanwhile, Shi Taifeng, who previously held the United Front post, has moved to oversee the Organisation Department, which plays a crucial role in selecting and promoting party officials.

Xi Jinping has been China’s paramount leader since 2012, holding the top positions in the Communist Party, the military, and the state. His leadership has significantly reshaped China’s political landscape, placing a strong emphasis on centralised authority and a more assertive global posture.
