In a focused crackdown ahead of the festive season, the Delhi Police seized 325 rolls of banned Chinese Manjha and arrested two brothers in the Sunder Nagri area of Delhi on Friday. The action was taken by a team from Nand Nagri Police Station as part of a special drive targeting the illegal sale of this hazardous nylon-based kite string.

Injuries brought on by Chinese Manjha have been increasing as Raksha Bandhan and Independence Day (15 August) draw near. The Delhi Police have responded by stepping up their efforts to stop the spread and use of the hazardous thread, which is known to seriously injure people, animals, and birds, and in certain situations, kill them.

A team led by Inspector Anand Yadav, SHO of PS Nand Nagri, along with Head Constables Padam Singh, Arun, and Constable Om Shish, carried out a raid at a location in the Jhuggi cluster of Sunder Nagri in response to a tip from local sources.  During the search, the team recovered 325 reels of Chinese Manjha. The police apprehended two suspects at the location—22-year-old Samir, son of Shahzad, and his 18-year-old younger brother Shakir, both residents of Sunder Nagri.

A case has been registered under Section 223(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 5 and 15 of the Environment Protection Act at PS Nand Nagri. Further investigation is underway. During preliminary questioning, the accused confessed to their involvement in stocking the banned Manjha. They disclosed that the reels were intended for sale at the forthcoming festivals in the vicinity of Nand Nagri.

In light of several fatal and non-fatal incidents linked to Chinese Manjha across the national capital, Delhi Police teams have been instructed to intensify surveillance and take strict action against those engaged in its illegal sale and distribution, especially in the lead-up to national celebrations.
