Arvind Kejriwal urges CEC to act on voter list irregularities.

Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal recently addressed a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), expressing serious concerns about alleged irregularities in the voter list for the New Delhi Assembly constituency.

With the assembly elections in the national capital approaching, Kejriwal highlighted these issues as a potential threat to the integrity of the electoral process.

In his letter, Kejriwal accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to manipulate the voter lists in the New Delhi Assembly constituency through what he termed a “systematic” effort.

He described this as an attempt to undermine the fairness and transparency of the upcoming elections, casting a shadow over the democratic process.

Kejriwal pointed out that the BJP’s actions seemed to be reminiscent of the days when booth capturing used to occur in India. However, he argued that this attempt was even more insidious than the practices of the past.

While booth capturing in earlier times was done openly, the current allegations involve covert, backdoor tactics to manipulate the voter rolls without the public’s knowledge. Kejriwal expressed his grave concerns about the implications of such actions on the democratic system.

The former Delhi CM referred to a specific instance where the BJP allegedly tried to remove 5,500 genuine votes, representing about 5.5% of the total electorate, while adding around 13,000 fake votes, which would have accounted for 13% of the existing voter base.

If these attempts had been successful, they would have permanently altered the voter composition in the constituency by a staggering 18%. Kejriwal called this a form of “electoral booth capturing” through unlawful means.

Furthermore, the letter detailed how the BJP was allegedly using the addresses of its Members of Parliament (MPs) and Union Ministers to transfer votes from across the country into the New Delhi constituency.

According to Kejriwal, the BJP had now shifted to this new tactic after its previous attempts to manipulate the voter rolls were uncovered. He even claimed that 33 new votes had been submitted for transfer to the official residence of BJP MP Pravesh Verma.

Kejriwal’s accusations also extended to Union Ministers and members of the Union Cabinet, alleging that they were directly involved in this malpractice.

He urged the Chief Election Commissioner to take immediate and strict action, including registering a criminal First Information Report (FIR) against those responsible for these attempts to tamper with the voter rolls.

He emphasised the importance of maintaining the sanctity of the electoral process and protecting the rights of voters in the capital.

The AAP National Convenor’s letter comes at a time when political tensions are running high ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections.

With allegations of voter manipulation now on the table, it remains to be seen how the Election Commission will respond to these claims and what actions will be taken to ensure a fair and transparent election process in the city.
