The Bar Council of India (BCI) has removed Sanjeev Nasiar from his position as vice chairman of the Bar Council of Delhi while an inquiry is being conducted into the authenticity of his law degree.
Nasiar, who also serves as the president of the Aam Aadmi Party’s legal cell, holds a law degree from Devi Ahilya Bai Vishwavidyalaya in Indore.
In a statement released on Sunday, the BCI announced that a sub-committee formed to investigate Nasiar’s degree concluded that its authenticity is questionable. The BCI’s general council accepted the committee's findings and decided to refer the matter to the CBI for further investigation into the degree’s validity.
"Pending the outcome of the investigation, Sanjeev Nasiar is removed from the position of vice chairman, Bar Council of Delhi," said the statement, signed by BCI secretary Srimanto Sen.
The BCI emphasised that this action was necessary to protect the integrity and dignity of the legal profession and to maintain public confidence in it.
The release added, "The BCI is committed to upholding the prestige and honor of the legal profession, ensuring that only individuals who meet the highest standards of ethics and qualifications are allowed to practice law in India."
