The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has expressed its approval of Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena's decision to nominate Delhi Home Minister Kailash Gahlot to hoist the national flag at the Chhatrasal Stadium event on August 15.
AAP welcomed the move, stating that it respects democratic principles by selecting an elected representative over an appointed official, emphasising the value of the people's mandate in governance.
Delhi LG Vinai Kumar Saxena's decision to nominate Kailash Gahlot for the flag hoisting comes after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is currently in jail, requested that Minister Atishi be allowed to perform the honour on his behalf during the Independence Day celebrations.
This year's event marks India's 78th Independence Day, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to lead the celebrations at the historic Red Fort in Delhi. As is customary, he will unfurl the national flag and deliver an address to the nation from the ramparts of the iconic monument.
In preparation for the event, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced that metro services will begin at 4 a.m. on August 15 to facilitate public attendance at the ceremony.
The DMRC stated that metro services would be operational on all lines from all terminal stations, with trains running at a frequency of 15 minutes until 6:00 a.m. Afterward, the regular timetable will be followed for the rest of the day.
Special arrangements will be in place for exit only at the Lal Quila, Jama Masjid, and Chandni Chowk Metro stations, which are closest to the venue. Passengers can use their Invitation Cards for the return journey from these three stations, and the cost of travel will be reimbursed to DMRC by the Ministry of Defence.
This decision has been seen as a significant gesture toward upholding democratic values and ensuring the involvement of elected representatives in key national events.
AAP's statement reflects the party's support for decisions that prioritise the principles of democracy and respect for the people's choice in governance.
