A Mumbai court has convicted an Afghan national for residing in India using a false identity. Habibullah Prang, a 38-year-old man from Tamer Zurmat District in Pakita Province, Afghanistan, was found guilty of using forged documents to stay in Mumbai since 2007.
The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court sentenced Prang to 11 months in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 8,000. Additionally, the court ordered his deportation back to Afghanistan after serving his sentence.
Prang’s illegal stay in India came to light after a thorough investigation by the Mumbai Crime Branch, Unit-5.
The authorities had registered a case against him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as well as the Passport Act, the Foreigners Order, and the Foreigners Act.
The charges against Prang included forgery, using fraudulent documents, and breaching foreigner registration rules.
The case began when the Crime Branch acted on confidential information and carried out a raid. During the operation, it was revealed that Prang had been living in Wadala, Mumbai, under the alias “Zaheer Ali Khan.”
He had also obtained a PAN card and driving license in this false identity, further complicating the case.
