An Akasa Air aircraft and a SpiceJet plane came in contact on a taxiway at the Delhi airport on Thursday afternoon, resulting in damage to both aircraft and forcing them to be grounded, officials said.
The incident occurred around 2.15 pm at Terminal 1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport when the two aircraft were taxiing in opposite directions.
According to officials, the Akasa Air aircraft was moving towards the runway for take-off, while the SpiceJet plane was taxiing towards the parking stand after arriving from Leh.
The Akasa Air aircraft was scheduled to operate flight QP-1406 from Delhi to Hyderabad. The airline confirmed that its Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft was stationary when it was struck by another aircraft during taxiing.
“All passengers and crew were safely disembarked. In line with established protocols, the relevant authorities have been informed, and the matter is under investigation,” Akasa Air said in a statement.
SpiceJet reports structural damage
SpiceJet said its Boeing 737-700 aircraft was involved in a ground occurrence while taxiing at Delhi airport, resulting in damage to its right winglet and the left-hand horizontal stabiliser of another aircraft belonging to a different airline.
The aircraft, which had arrived from Leh, has been grounded at Delhi following the incident.
Officials confirmed that the wings of both aircraft made contact on the taxiway. Both aircraft have been taken out of service for inspection and repairs.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed and a detailed investigation into the incident is expected to determine the sequence of events and responsibility.
No injuries were reported in the incident, and airport operations continued without major disruption.
