Union Home Minister Amit Shah landed in Assam’s Dibrugarh on Friday, where he launched massive development and infrastructure projects, including the second legislative assembly complex.


Shah unveiled the ventures in the presence of state Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, as well as MPs and MLAs of the upper Assam constituencies, along with several state cabinet ministers and senior government officials.


While a cumulative worth of the projects is pegged at ₹1,715 crore, the legislative assembly complex and MLA hostel that will help establish Dibrugarh as the second administrative hub were constructed at a cost of ₹284 crore.


Shah laid the foundation stone for the second legislative assembly complex on Friday, and shared the update on his social media handle on X. The project includes a three-storey assembly building, a nine-storey hostel for MLAs, an 800-seat capacity auditorium and a barrack for security personnel.


“It is a landmark day for Assam, as the foundation for the New Assam Legislative Assembly Building will be laid in Dibrugarh. When the complex is ready it will enhance the ease for the people in Upper Assam region in availing benefits of good governance. Looking forward to attending the program,” he wrote.

 

 

 


Other facilities inaugurated include the first phase of the modern multi-disciplinary sports complex worth ₹238 crore, while the foundation stone for its second phase, which will be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹209 crore, was also laid by the Home Minister.


The initial phase of the project includes an indoor stadium, swimming pool, football field, main gallery, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts and hostels; and the second phase of the sports facility will have an additional seating space for 30,000 people, a central playground and an athletic track, officials said.


Shah also laid the foundation stone for the ₹292-crore Wildlife Health and Research Centre that will mete out the treatment of wild animals, and carry out enhanced research at its laboratory facilities along with training units.

The project will include an educational and administrative block, a central laboratory, a museum, a state-of-the-art auditorium, a clinical block and a laboratory with radiation facilities.


These will help improve coordination among forest officials, veterinarians and researchers, the officials added.


Another project launched is the ₹692-crore restoration and rejuvenation of wetlands under the National Disaster Mitigation fund.


The project is aimed at restoring and rejuvenating 15 scientifically selected wetlands across nine districts to reduce urban flood risks, enhance the water retention capacity, mitigate the risk of flooding and help in overall flood management of the Brahmaputra River basin in the state.
