Major Rohit Bachwala, the Indian Army Doctor who is making headlines for delivering a baby girl at Jhansi railway station, was commended by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi on Monday for his exemplary service beyond the call of duty.
The 31-year-old medical officer from Jhansi Military Hospital performed an emergency delivery using a pocket knife on 5 July after a pregnant woman went into unexpected labor. Seeing the woman's pain, the Army officer, who was waiting for his train to Hyderabad, immediately reacted, assuring a safe delivery.
In a post on X, the official handle of the Indian Army wrote, "Displaying exemplary presence of mind and clinical skill, Major Rohit conducted an emergency delivery on the railway platform itself, using improvised resources including a towel, a knife and hair clips. The newborn was unresponsive at birth; however, he successfully resuscitated the infant. The mother later developed complications related to the placental delivery, which he managed effectively using available protective measures and clinical judgment."
"Major Rohit’s swift and decisive action, under non-clinical and resource-constrained circumstances, is a testament to his medical proficiency, composure under pressure, and unwavering commitment to the ethos of the Armed Forces," the post added.

Major Bachwala speaking on his immediate response to the situation said, "With no access to a proper operation theatre, I had to rely on tools I had on me. To clamp the umbilical cord, I used a hair clip. A pocket knife helped me cut it after ensuring the baby was stable. The mother and child were in a precarious condition, and every second mattered."
"There was no time to waste. We created a makeshift delivery area and ensured basic hygiene with the help of available supplies. It was divine intervention that I was present at that moment," the Major added.
