Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has appointed Bharatiya Janata Party leader Arvinder Singh Lovely as the protem speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
The first session of the newly elected assembly is scheduled for 24 February, during which the election for the legislative assembly speaker will take place at 2 pm. Prior to this, all newly elected MLAs will take their oaths in a ceremony set for 11 am.
According to the Delhi Assembly bulletin, Lieutenant Governor Saxena will address the House on 25 February, following which the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports will be tabled.
Later in the day, the assembly will open for a motion of thanks on the lieutenant governor’s address. The discussion on this motion is scheduled to commence at 11 am on 26 February, after which the deputy speaker of the Delhi assembly will be elected.
The bulletin further stated that notices for the election of the speaker must be submitted by noon on 22 February.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who took the oath of office on 22 February, chaired the first meeting of her cabinet the same day and announced two key policy decisions.
The government will implement the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat scheme with a top-up of ₹5 lakh and table 14 pending CAG reports in the first sitting of the assembly.
Addressing a press conference, Gupta outlined her government’s priorities and confirmed that the scheme’s implementation was a major pre-election promise made by the BJP.
She criticised the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for failing to implement the scheme and reaffirmed her commitment to delivering on BJP’s pledges.
“The first cabinet meeting discussed and approved two crucial decisions—implementing Ayushman Bharat in Delhi with a ₹5 lakh top-up and presenting the 14 CAG reports that were not tabled under the previous administration.
We are committed to fulfilling all our promises to the people,” Gupta stated.
She further clarified that the Delhi government will fund the top-up amount and sign a memorandum of understanding with the Centre to facilitate the scheme’s rollout.
