Twenty-one Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs, including former Delhi minister Atishi, were suspended from the Assembly session for the day following a heated protest over the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) report on the now-scrapped liquor policy.
The disruption began as soon as the Delhi Assembly session commenced, with Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena addressing the House. However, AAP legislators interrupted his speech, raising slogans against the BJP government. Despite multiple requests from Speaker Vijender Gupta to maintain order, the MLAs continued their protest, leading to their suspension for the day.
Following their suspension, the AAP MLAs staged a sit-in within the Assembly premises. Addressing the media, Atishi accused the BJP of disrespecting Dr. BR Ambedkar by allegedly removing his portrait from the Chief Minister's office.
"The BJP has revealed its true colors by removing Babasaheb Ambedkar's portrait. Does the party believe that Prime Minister Narendra Modi can replace Babasaheb?" Atishi questioned.
She further asserted that their protest would continue until the portrait was reinstated. The suspended lawmakers chanted slogans such as "Babasaheb ka ye apmaan nahi sahega Hindustan" (India will not tolerate this insult to Babasaheb).
Meanwhile, the BJP-led Delhi government is set to table one of the 14 pending CAG reports, which highlight financial irregularities under the previous AAP administration led by Arvind Kejriwal. The focus will be on the controversial liquor policy that was later scrapped.
