In a scathing critique of the BJP's handling of flood management in Assam, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of betraying the people with their promise to make Assam flood-free.

This criticism comes as the state grapples with a severe flood crisis affecting over four lakh people across several districts.

Kharge's remarks were made amidst a worsening flood situation in Assam, with key rivers like the Kopili, Barak, and Kushiyara flowing above danger levels. The state has been experiencing incessant rainfall, exacerbating the flood conditions.

“The flood situation in Assam is grim. Lakhs of people are affected in 15 districts, and 36 people have lost their lives so far. The Congress party stands in solidarity with the people of Assam. Our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims," Kharge stated in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

He further criticised the Modi government and the state administration for their lack of effective response.

"We expect the Modi government and Assam government to provide prompt assistance, relief, and compensation to the affected people. People of the state have been squarely betrayed by the 'double engine' Modi-Shah promise of making Assam a flood-free state," Kharge added.

"In the past 10 years, on every issue, the Modi government has only indulged in the politics of lies, deceit, and treachery! India suffers due to the BJP," the Congress chief asserted.

Echoing Kharge's sentiments, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra urged the Assam government to expedite relief and rescue operations. In a Hindi post on X, she highlighted the devastating impact of the floods, which have severely disrupted life in the state.

"The news of 36 people dying in this disaster so far is saddening. Several lakh people in 19 districts of the state are affected by the floods. It is an appeal to the state government to speed up relief and rescue operations for the flood-affected people and also provide compensation to the families of the deceased," Priyanka Gandhi stated.

She also called upon Congress workers and leaders to assist the affected people in every possible way.

As the floodwaters continued to wreak havoc, districts including Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Darrang, Goalpara, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup, Karimganj, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, South Salmara, Tamulpur, and Udalguri remained heavily impacted.

Officials confirmed that the state has been receiving continuous rainfall over the past few days, leading to the extensive deluge.

The death toll from this year's floods, landslides, and storms has now reached 36.
