A cloud of mystery looms over the sudden death of Srinjoy Dasgupta, the only son of Rinku Majumdar, wife of newly-wed BJP leader Dilip Ghosh.
Srinjoy, also known as Pritam, was 27 years old and worked in an IT company in Salt Lake. His body was discovered on Tuesday afternoon at his residence in the Saporji Complex in Newtown, where he had been living alone.
Police sources revealed that Srinjoy was first taken to a private hospital in Bidhannagar after he was found unconscious. Doctors there reportedly refused admission and advised shifting him to a government facility.
“He was then taken to Bidhannagar Sub-District Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. His mother was present with him at the time,” said a police officer.
The police have recovered the body, which has been sent to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem. The report is expected to shed light on the exact cause of death. Investigators have so far refrained from making any official statements.
Srinjoy’s death comes just 25 days after the marriage of his mother Rinku Majumdar to the BJP’s former state president Ghosh. The wedding took place on 18 April, a day when Srinjoy was reportedly away on a pre-planned holiday with friends. In a statement to the media around that time, he had expressed his happiness over his mother’s new beginning.
“Mum has been fulfilling her social and family responsibilities for 13 years. This time, she is starting her own life. I am happy from the bottom of my heart,” Srinjoy had said. He also mentioned that he accepted Ghosh as his father, adding, “There is an emotional vacuum in people. I am happy that I get a father at a certain age.”
Despite his public support for the marriage, close sources suggest that Srinjoy had been struggling privately. He was reportedly battling substance addiction and had ongoing disputes with his mother over the issue. Rinku had allegedly made several attempts to help her son, but those efforts reportedly yielded little change.
Following the marriage, Srinjoy chose to live independently in the Newtown residence, while his mother moved in with Ghosh. According to those close to the family, Srinjoy’s addictive habits may have worsened in recent weeks.
Sources further claim that an overdose of sleeping tablets might have caused his death. However, this remains unconfirmed until the post-mortem results are released.
Neither Rinku nor Ghosh has made any public statement regarding Srinjoy’s passing. The silence from both has only deepened the mystery surrounding the circumstances of the young man’s death.
Investigators are currently exploring all possible angles—including substance abuse, accidental overdose, and any signs of foul play. The final post-mortem report is awaited to determine the cause conclusively.
