The LG, who is appointed by the president on the advice of the central government, holds a significant role in the administration of Delhi.

The BJP's victory in Delhi after more than 26 years is expected to foster a cooperative and cordial relationship with the Lieutenant Governor (LG), which will significantly improve governance and service delivery in the city, according to party leaders.

During the 10-year tenure of the outgoing Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, Delhi faced frequent clashes between the AAP and the LG's office. These conflicts, especially with current LG VK Saxena and former LGs Anil Baijal and Najeeb Jung, created obstacles in governance and public service delivery.

The LG, who is appointed by the president on the advice of the central government, holds a significant role in the administration of Delhi. Under Saxena's leadership, after he took office in May 2022, there were constant disagreements with the AAP government over issues such as sanitation, Yamuna river pollution, and infrastructure development.

The ongoing tensions between the AAP government and the LG office had a major impact on governance, as the LG used his control over the services department and bureaucracy to limit the powers of the AAP government. In return, the AAP government’s defiant response hampered day-to-day functioning and public services.

A senior BJP leader emphasised that the LG, as the head of the Delhi government, holds substantial authority. The elected government in Delhi must cooperate with the LG and respect the constitutional dignity of his office, which was often overlooked by the AAP government.

Now, with the BJP in power both at the Centre and in Delhi, the issue of balancing relations with the LG will no longer be a point of contention. BJP leaders are optimistic that Delhi's governance will see a major improvement, particularly in key areas like sanitation, pollution control, infrastructure, water supply, and public transport.

The longstanding conflict over jurisdiction between the AAP government and the LG’s office, which was a key issue during the previous tenure, is expected to fade as the BJP seeks to work closely with the LG to ensure smooth governance.

Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva confirmed that the party respects constitutional authorities and strives for coordination to serve the people. “The LG has always worked to ensure the interests of the people of Delhi, and that aligns with the BJP’s goals. Under his guidance, our government will provide high-quality services to the people of Delhi,” Sachdeva said.

The BJP is now focused on transforming Delhi into a "developed capital," as promised in its election manifesto. With the recent assembly election victory, the BJP aims to implement its vision of a prosperous Delhi.

The BJP, which had been out of power in Delhi since 1998, won the most recent assembly election by securing 44 seats and leading in four more. The AAP, while securing 21 seats, was far behind in this contest, and Congress failed to win any seats in the Delhi Assembly for the third consecutive time.
