The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to appoint a new national president before the announcement of the Bihar Assembly elections, sources said on Tuesday. A panel of names has been prepared, and consultations are expected to resume after the Vice President election on September 9.
JP Nadda is the current BJP national president, having held the position since January 2020 after serving as the party’s working president in 2019.
According to sources, the party high command has drawn up a list of potential candidates for the role. Once the Vice President election is concluded, the schedule for electing the new party president will be finalised.
Ahead of the national-level appointment, new state presidents are also likely to be announced in key states such as Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka.

The sequencing is significant, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to be elected as a member of the BJP’s National Council from Uttar Pradesh, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah will represent Gujarat.
Both leaders would then be eligible to act as proposers for the nomination papers of the new president.
Party leaders have indicated that the decision will not be guided by caste, regional or social equations.
Instead, the new president is expected to be a senior figure with proven organisational experience at the national level, tasked with strengthening the party’s structure. Sources said the choice is unlikely to be a surprise name.
However, they also cautioned that if the appointment is not finalised before the Bihar polls are announced, the selection will be deferred until after the elections.
