Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi has criticised the BJP, saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign in Delhi signals the party’s uncertainty about winning the upcoming assembly elections.
She said that if the BJP was confident about its victory, the Prime Minister would not need to campaign so extensively in the capital. She added that the BJP’s claims of an assured win do not align with their actions on the ground.
Chaturvedi also spoke about Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) complaints regarding alleged intimidation of its workers. She said that she hoped the Election Commission and the Lieutenant Governor would show the same urgency in addressing AAP’s concerns as they do with BJP’s complaints.
Her comments came after AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal wrote a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, alleging that BJP workers were harassing AAP’s grassroots volunteers in the New Delhi Assembly constituency. He claimed that the Delhi Police were also involved in intimidation, detaining volunteers without reason.
Kejriwal said that one of AAP’s senior volunteers, Chetan, was unlawfully detained at Tilak Marg Police Station under Section 126 of BNSS, 2023.
He alleged that Chetan had no previous cases against him but was falsely accused. According to Kejriwal, he was physically assaulted by police officials, fainted, and had to be rushed to Lady Hardinge Hospital.
After a struggle, Chetan was granted bail by the Returning Officer and SDM concerned. Kejriwal accused the Delhi Police of systematically targeting AAP volunteers to weaken their campaign. He said that this was an attempt to discourage participation in election-related activities.
He urged the Election Commission to intervene and ensure a fair election process. He also requested that officials take action against those involved in harassing AAP workers.
The Delhi Assembly elections will be held on February 5, with the counting of votes scheduled for February 8.
