The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as the NDA's candidate for Vice President. The decision was made at a BJP Parliamentary Board meeting. The meeting was held to finalise the party's choice for the election.
Announcing the nomination, BJP president JP Nadda said a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided Radhakrishnan's name after an extensive deliberation.
Nadda hoped the opposition parties will support the NDA candidate.
The NDA candidate Chandrapuram Ponnuswamy Radhakrishnan was born in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, on October 20, 1957.
Radhakrishnan has held several important political roles. He became Governor of Maharashtra on July 31, 2024. Before that, he was the Governor of Jharkhand from February 2023 to July 2024. He also had additional roles. He served as Governor of Telangana from March to July 2024. He was also Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry from March to August 2024.
The vice-presidential election, necessitated by the resignation of incumbent Jagdeep Dhankhar last month, is scheduled for September 9. The last date for filing nomination is August 22.
