After securing dominant wins in the Chhattisgarh Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continued its winning streak in the state's civic elections.
As vote counting commenced on Saturday morning, early trends indicated the party’s stronghold over urban local bodies.
Buoyed by the success of welfare schemes and the fulfillment of key electoral promises by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai’s government, the BJP registered a comprehensive victory by securing all ten mayoral positions across the state’s municipal corporations.
Elections were held on February 11 for a total of 173 urban local bodies, including 10 municipal corporations, 49 municipal councils, and 114 nagar panchayats. As per data released by state election officials, the BJP not only clinched all 10 mayoral posts but also won chairperson positions in 35 municipal councils and 81 nagar panchayats.
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress managed to secure chairperson posts in eight municipal councils and 22 nagar panchayats. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won one municipal council chairperson post, while the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) secured a chairperson position in one nagar panchayat.
Independent candidates also made their mark, winning chairperson posts in five municipal councils and ten nagar panchayats.
As counting continued, BJP was either leading or had already won the majority of municipal wards, further consolidating its dominance in urban governance.
Reacting to the results, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai called it a "historic day," stating that the victory would be remembered as a landmark moment in Chhattisgarh’s political history.
