Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders on Saturday derided Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for certain remarks made during his address in the Lok Sabha.
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra and IT department head Amit Malviya shared video clips on X (formerly Twitter), criticising Gandhi for his interpretation of "tapasya" as generating "heat in the body".
Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had delivered the speech as part of the Winter Session of Parliament in New Delhi.
During the address, he reflected on India's constitutional history and made references to figures such as Eklavya and VD Savarkar, but the BJP was quick to dismiss his comments as gaffes.
Mockery on Social Media
Sambit Patra took to X, alleging, "Such knowledge comes from George Soros," implying external ideological influence behind Gandhi's remarks. Meanwhile, Amit Malviya sarcastically dubbed Gandhi as the "undisputed king of bloopers."
The BJP highlighted Gandhi’s reference to Eklavya from the Mahabharat, describing him as "a boy aged six or seven years" and stating that "Dronacharya cut off his thumb."
These points were singled out to cite alleged inaccuracies in Gandhi's speech.
Several BJP members, including Union ministers, were observed laughing during Gandhi's address, amplifying the mockery on social media.
Constitutional reflections and controversy
Rahul Gandhi’s speech centred around the 75th anniversary of the Constitution's adoption.
Calling it "a document of modern India," Gandhi said it could not have been written without ancient Indian traditions and ideas.
He further invoked VD Savarkar, a figure celebrated by the BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), asserting, "Savarkar has clearly stated in his writings that there is nothing Indian about our Constitution. He believes Manusmriti should replace it as the governing text."
Gandhi added, "The Constitution is a document of modern India, but it draws heavily from our ancient heritage. This is what the fight is about."
The BJP swiftly countered these claims, with many leaders referencing instances of Congress’s alleged undermining of constitutional values in the past.
While Gandhi sought to frame his argument as a defence of constitutional values, the BJP turned his remarks into a narrative of mockery.
