Authorities at Raja Bhoj International Airport in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, received a bomb threat via email on Sunday, 6 July, prompting a full-scale security sweep of the premises.
Police later confirmed the threat was a hoax but said an investigation is underway to trace the source of the email.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Addl DCP) Malkeet Singh told the media agency that the email, received by airport authorities, warned of a bomb without specifying its location within the facility.
Acting on the alert, security personnel carried out an extensive search of the airport but found no suspicious objects or explosives.
“Yesterday, we received information from the airport authority regarding an email about a planted bomb,” Singh said.
“The message did not specify where it was placed. A thorough security check was conducted, and no IED or bomb was found.”
Singh also revealed that a similar threat had been received in the past, which also turned out to be a false alarm. In that case, legal action was initiated, but no explosive material was discovered.
The police are now working to identify the origin of the latest email and determine whether the threat was a prank or the work of an organisation.
“We are investigating to trace the sender. Whoever is responsible—whether a prankster or part of a group—will face strict legal action,” the officer said.
State authorities have reassured the public that there is no current threat to passenger safety, and operations at the airport have returned to normal. However, security measures remain heightened as a precaution.
