A BSF jawan was attacked on the India-Bangladesh border in north Bengal on Thursday night while attempting to stop a cow smuggling operation. The jawan was allegedly shot at and brutally assaulted by the smugglers, who also tried to strangle him by hitting him on the head during the confrontation.
This incident occurred on Thursday in Kalamgacha, located in the Phansidewa block, near Siliguri.
The BSF swiftly arrested one of the smugglers involved in the attack and handed him over to the local police. A country-made pistol, live cartridges, and a mobile phone were recovered from the arrested individual.
The suspect, identified as Mohammad Muzaffar Hussain from Murikhawa village in the Phansidewa block, was presented before a court on Friday.
According to police sources, Hussain was found in possession of firearms, mobile phones, and several smuggled cows.
Chiranjit Ghosh, the officer-in-charge of Phansidewa Police Station, confirmed that a case had been filed against the accused under specific legal provisions based on the BSF's complaint, and an investigation is currently underway.
A BSF officer from the Siliguri sector reported that apart from the firearm and mobile phone, four cows were recovered from the scene. These were handed over to the police for further action.
The incident unfolded late at night as the BSF jawans were patrolling the Murikhawa border in the Phansidewa block. “The smugglers were attempting to cross the barbed-wire fence into Bangladesh via the Mahananda River. Upon spotting the smugglers, the BSF jawans attempted to stop them, prompting shots to be fired from the smugglers' side. While the BSF jawans returned fire, some smugglers managed to flee. However, one BSF constable, Lalit Raut, received injuries on his head as the attackers tried to strangle him,” said a BSF official.
The BSF managed to apprehend one of the smugglers at the scene, but three others escaped. The arrested individual, who had been on the BSF's wanted list, was caught red-handed. After a medical examination at the Phansidewa Rural Hospital, the suspect was handed over to the Phansidewa Police Station.
The recovered cows have been sent to a stable and handed over to the police.
