A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan from India was detained by Pakistan Rangers on Thursday after he accidentally crossed the Punjab border. According to a PTI report, a flag meeting between the two sides is currently underway to discuss his early release.
This incident comes at a time when tensions between India and Pakistan are already high following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, which claimed 26 lives.
In response to the attack, India took several strong steps on Wednesday. These included downgrading diplomatic ties with Pakistan, expelling Pakistani military attachés, suspending the over 60-year-old Indus Water Treaty, and closing the Attari land transit point.
These actions were taken after the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) was briefed about evidence of cross-border links to the Pahalgam attack, according to Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra.

These new measures have severely strained the already fragile relationship between the two countries, effectively ending the few remaining diplomatic channels.
In retaliation, Pakistan announced its own set of countermeasures. It suspended the 1972 Simla Agreement, closed its airspace to Indian flights, shut the Wagah border crossing, stopped all trade with India, and warned that any attempt to divert river water under the Indus Water Treaty would be considered an "Act of War".
These decisions were taken during a high-level meeting led by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to respond to India’s diplomatic and strategic moves following the Pahalgam attack.
