City, not Bengaluru, tops India's slowest traffic

New Delhi ranks 10th in the index, with an average travel time of 23 minutes for a 10 km trip.

Bengaluru ranks third on the global index, following Kolkata.

Kolkata has the second slowest traffic in the world, according to the 2024 TomTom Traffic Index by a Dutch company. The average travel time for just 10 km is 34 minutes and 33 seconds.

Kolkata is only behind Barranquilla, a city in Colombia, which has an average travel time of 36 minutes and 6 seconds.

Although Barranquilla has slower travel times, it ranks 16th in traffic congestion, while Kolkata is much worse at 169th. The average speed in Barranquilla is 21.6 km/h, while Kolkata's traffic moves at just 14.5 km/h.

Other Indian cities also face traffic problems. Bengaluru has the third slowest traffic globally, with an average travel time of 34 minutes and 10 seconds.

Pune follows, ranking fourth with a travel time of 33 minutes and 22 seconds. New Delhi ranks 10th, with a 10 km trip taking 23 minutes. Cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, and Mumbai are also on the list.

The report shows that 76 per cent of the 500 cities studied have slower average speeds compared to last year, indicating worsening traffic worldwide.

The TomTom Traffic Index uses data from cars to study travel times and traffic patterns. It looks at factors like road design, speed limits, congestion, construction work, and weather to determine how long trips take in each city.
