Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in the Netherlands for a two-day official visit, marking his second trip to the country since 2017. Following the conclusion of his visit to the United Arab Emirates, the Indian leader landed in Amsterdam, where he is scheduled to remain from May 15 to 17. During his stay, he will hold bilateral talks with his Dutch counterpart, Prime Minister Rob Jetten, and audience with Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima.
Upon his arrival in the Dutch capital, Modi emphasised that his visit would primarily focus on bolstering trade and investment relations, particularly in the wake of the free trade agreement between India and the European Union. Writing on the social media platform X, he noted that the EU-India pact has already provided a substantial boost to economic ties, offering a timely opportunity to deepen cooperation in cutting-edge and critical sectors such as semiconductors, water management, and clean energy.
The PM's itinerary also includes meetings with Dutch business leaders to explore further economic engagements, collaborations. Furthermore, he is set to address members of the Indian community at a dedicated event on May 16. Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted that the visit serves as an excellent opportunity to reinforce the multifaceted partnership between the two nations and to engage directly with the largest Indian diaspora on mainland Europe.
Although trade and investments still form the backbone of relations between New Delhi and Amsterdam, the ties have grown much stronger in the last few years to cover crucial sectors including agriculture and healthcare. The economic significance of the partnership is quite huge, considering the fact that the Dutch nation forms one of India’s most important destinations in Europe in terms of trade, which stood at 27.8 billion dollars for 2024-25. Furthermore, the nation ranks fourth on India’s list of biggest investors in terms of cumulative foreign direct investment worth 55.6 billion dollars. These economic ties have been further strengthened by the strong connection between people, with 90,000 NRIs living in the Netherlands.
