Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday conducted an aerial survey of the Kanwar Yatra route in Bijnor district, reviewing preparations for the annual pilgrimage dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The Kanwar Yatra sees scores of devotees, known as Kanwariyas, collect holy water from rivers and walk hundreds of kilometres to offer it at Lord Shiva’s shrines.
The pilgrimage is observed with fasting, worship and devotion by followers across the country, especially during the month of Shravan in the Hindu calendar.
State authorities said extensive arrangements have been made to facilitate the smooth conduct of the Yatra and ensure the safety and comfort of the devotees.
Uttar Pradesh Urban Development Minister A.K. Sharma emphasised that the administration is working to ensure the route is free of potholes and all open drains are securely covered.
“This one month is like a celebration across the country. We are making sure there are no potholes on the roads, particularly in cities along the Kanwar route. All manholes and drains are being covered to prevent any accidents, especially at night,” Sharma said.
He also noted that street lighting has been improved and separate restrooms for men and women have been set up along the path. “We are arranging meals for the Kanwar Yatris and ensuring that the facilities are even better than last year’s,” he added.
Sharma further mentioned that lessons from other religious processions, including Muharram’s Tazia processions, have informed planning this year. “We will request Kanwar Yatris not to use very tall DJ setups, to avoid accidental contact with high-tension power lines,” he said.
During his visit to Bijnor, Chief Minister Adityanath also offered condolences to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dharampal Singh, following the demise of his mother. The Chief Minister visited Singh’s residence to pay floral tributes.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Adityanath wrote, “Today, I visited the residence of the State General Secretary (Organisation) Dharmpal Ji in Bijnor district, offered flowers at the portrait of his late revered mother, paid my respects, and consoled the grieving family members. In this hour of sorrow, my condolences are with the family, and I pray to Lord Shri Ram to grant the departed soul a place at his sacred feet.”
