Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi booked for comments over President's Budget speech.

The controversy surrounding Sonia Gandhi’s remarks about President Droupadi Murmu continues to escalate. In the latest development, a complaint has been lodged against Sonia Gandhi at the Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe police station in Ranchi, Jharkhand.

The complaint has been filed by Anjali Lakra, a resident of Ranchi.

Lakra stated in her complaint that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi used derogatory language against President Droupadi Murmu following her Budget Session address in Parliament on 31 January 2025.

She alleged that President Murmu was mentally harassed by Rahul Gandhi, who referred to her as "boring", while Sonia Gandhi reportedly called her "poor lady", "helpless", "poor woman" and "tired".

Lakra has demanded legal action under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The police are currently examining the matter, and further action is expected.

Sonia Gandhi’s comments on the President’s Budget speech have drawn criticism from various sections of the country. A similar complaint was recently filed in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, by a lawyer who accused her of disrespecting the nation’s highest constitutional authority.

In addition, BJP MPs have moved a privilege motion against Sonia Gandhi in the Lok Sabha over her remarks. The issue has also been highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his campaigning for the Delhi Assembly elections.
