In a scathing rebuke, the Congress has launched a blistering attack on the BJP over its MP Anantkumar Hegde's recent remarks about amending the Constitution. The Congress alleged that the BJP's ambitions for a sweeping victory in elections aim to transform India into a dictatorship officially.
Congress general secretary, organisation, K C Venugopal, lambasted the BJP on social media platform X, accusing the party of harboring intentions to dismantle the Constitution to suit its "autocratic plans." Venugopal contended that the BJP's true sentiments lie in remarks like Hegde's, which reflect the party's disregard for constitutional values.
Venugopal further criticized the BJP's track record, alleging that the party seeks to impose duties on citizens while eroding their fundamental rights. He pointed to the BJP's alleged aspirations to abolish reservations and compromise constitutional institutions like the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the judiciary.
The Congress leader emphasized that the Constitution poses an obstacle to the BJP's autocratic agenda, prompting the party to aim for a staggering 400-plus seats in Parliament.
Despite the BJP's efforts, Venugopal expressed confidence in Indian democracy's resilience, asserting that it will reject any attempts to undermine the Constitution crafted by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
Hegde's controversial remarks were made during a public address in Karnataka, where he asserted the BJP's need for a two-thirds majority in Parliament to amend the Constitution and rectify perceived distortions introduced by the Congress.
Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram echoed similar sentiments, warning of dire consequences if the Constitution is amended according to the BJP-RSS agenda.
Chidambaram highlighted the potential threats to parliamentary democracy, federalism, minority rights, and linguistic diversity posed by such amendments.
The BJP swiftly distanced itself from Hegde's comments, terming them his "personal opinion" and seeking clarification from him. The party's Karnataka unit emphasized its commitment to upholding the Constitution and asserted that Hegde's remarks did not reflect its stance.
The controversy surrounding Hegde's remarks underscores the ongoing ideological battle between the BJP and its critics over the fundamental principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
