The Congress on Saturday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign trip, labelling it a “periodic jaunt” aimed at scoring domestic political points, while accusing him of neglecting the crisis in Manipur.
Prime Minister Modi embarked on a three-nation tour on Saturday, beginning with the annual G20 Summit in Brazil, followed by a visit to Guyana.
The Congress used the occasion to question his absence from the violence-stricken state of Manipur, which has been in turmoil since May 2023.
Congress General Secretary for Communications Jairam Ramesh remarked, “For the next 3 days, we will be spared the non-biological PM’s lie-surplus, dignity-deficit election campaign. He is off on his periodic foreign jaunt, where he will attempt to score domestic political points rather than engage in any pretence of statesmanship.”
He further criticised the Prime Minister for his “steadfast refusal” to visit Manipur, stating, “Why is Mr. Narendra Modi steadfastly refusing to visit the troubled state of Manipur that has been torn apart so tragically since May 2023?”
Ramesh lamented the prolonged suffering of Manipur’s residents, adding, “The refusal to visit Manipur is simply beyond understanding. The people of the troubled state are continuously taking the toll of ongoing violence. PM must have visited the place at least once.”
The Congress has consistently accused the Prime Minister of mishandling the situation in the north-eastern state, which has witnessed ethnic violence claiming over 200 lives since last year.
The political opposition’s critique coincides with Modi’s departure for a diplomatic engagement seen by the Congress as a political exercise rather than a demonstration of leadership.
