India’s active Covid-19 case count has once again crossed the 6,000-mark, with 378 new infections reported in the past 24 hours, according to data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Sunday, June 8. The nationwide tally of active cases currently stands at 6,133, with Kerala continuing to report the highest number of new infections, followed by Gujarat and West Bengal.
The latest figures also highlight a continuing rise in daily cases. While 378 new infections were recorded since Saturday, 753 people recovered from the virus during the same period. Kerala remains the worst-affected state, contributing 144 of the new cases and accounting for a total of 1,950 active infections. Gujarat reported 105 new cases, West Bengal logged 71, while Rajasthan and Delhi recorded 24 and 21 cases respectively.

The country also registered six Covid-related deaths between Saturday and Sunday. These included two in Karnataka, three in Kerala, and one in Tamil Nadu. The fatalities in Karnataka were a four-year-old child suffering from Cor Pulmonale and Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, and a 78-year-old man with Ischemic Heart Disease and Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura. Both individuals were incidentally found to be Covid-positive.
In Kerala, the deceased included a 51-year-old man with systemic hypertension, coronary artery disease, and chronic kidney disease; a 64-year-old man with type 2 diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and esophageal adenocarcinoma with metastasis; and a 92-year-old man who suffered from coronary artery disease (post-CABG), chronic kidney disease, multiple myeloma, and acute kidney injury.
The lone fatality in Tamil Nadu was a 42-year-old man with uncontrolled diabetes, acute kidney disease, and a seizure disorder.
As of June 8, the number of Covid patients cured or discharged since January 1 this year has reached 6,237. Over the same period, a total of 65 Covid-related deaths have been reported across the country. Notably, India had just 257 active cases as recently as May 22, indicating a sharp rise in cases over the past few weeks.
Despite the recent uptick, health officials continue to monitor the situation closely, urging citizens to remain cautious, especially in states showing higher transmission trends.
