India reported 269 new Covid-19 cases and nine deaths over the past 24 hours, taking the country’s active case tally to 7,400, the Union Health Ministry said on Saturday.
Karnataka recorded the sharpest single-day increase, with 132 new active cases. It was followed by Gujarat with 79, Kerala with 54, and Madhya Pradesh with 20. Other states such as Tamil Nadu (12), Sikkim (11), and Haryana (9) also saw a slight uptick in infections.
Kerala continues to be the most affected state, with 2,109 active cases, followed by Gujarat with 1,437 and Delhi with 672. Maharashtra’s tally stood at 613, while Karnataka recorded 527. Other states with relatively high active caseloads include Uttar Pradesh (248), Tamil Nadu (232), Rajasthan (180), and Andhra Pradesh (102).
Among the nine deaths reported in the last 24 hours, four were from Maharashtra and three from Kerala. One death each was recorded in Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. The cumulative death toll as of 1 January 2025 has reached 87, the ministry said.
Meanwhile, 991 patients recovered from the virus in the same period, bringing the total number of recoveries to 11,967.
On Friday, the country had reported 33 new cases, with the active tally at 7,154. That day, three deaths were reported—two in Maharashtra and one in Madhya Pradesh.
In Manipur, five new cases were confirmed on Friday. According to the Directorate of Health Services, three infections were from Imphal East and two from Imphal West. The results were based on 15 samples tested—one each from Imphal East and Tamenglong, and 13 from Imphal West.
In Rajasthan, the state’s Department of Medical, Health and Family Welfare said 30 to 35 new cases were being reported daily.
Dr Ravi Prakash Sharma, the department’s director, confirmed one death in the last 24 hours. “We have adequate medicines. So far, one person has died. They had tuberculosis,” he told the media agency.
