Leaders above 75 have been removed from the CPI(M) Politburo. An exception has been made for Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Pinarayi, now in his 80s, will remain in the Politburo. Other senior leaders like Prakash Karat, Brinda Karat, Subhashini Ali, Manik Sarkar, Suryakant Mishra, and G Ramakrishnan have stepped down.
The party has chosen new faces for the Politburo. Viju Krishnan, a Malayali and head of the All India Kisan Sabha, will be inducted. R Arun Kumar from Andhra Pradesh is also set to join.

With Brinda Karat and Subhashini Ali stepping down, two women will replace them. U Vasuki, a trade union leader from Tamil Nadu, and Mariam Dhawale from Maharashtra have been selected. Dhawale is the National General Secretary of the All India Democratic Women’s Association.
Other new members include K Balakrishnan from Tamil Nadu, Amraram from Rajasthan, Jitendra Chaudhury from Tripura, and Srideep Bhattacharya from Bengal.
The age limit policy was first put in place during the last Party Congress held in Kannur. It was strictly followed this time too.
However, Pinarayi was given an exemption. The Bengal unit of the party had opposed this. They asked that no exceptions be made.
Even so, the party allowed Pinarayi to continue, considering his role as Chief Minister. Seven senior leaders have now stepped down, but he remains.
