Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi will visit Srinagar and Udhampur on Friday to review the security situation in the Valley in the aftermath of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Defence officials confirmed.
"Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi will leave for Srinagar and Udhampur shortly," Defence officials said.
The visit comes days after heavily armed terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam on April 22, killing 26 individuals — including 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen — and injuring several others.
During his visit, the Army Chief is expected to hold meetings with senior military commanders and officials from various security and intelligence agencies. He will assess ongoing counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir and review Pakistan’s recent attempts to breach the ceasefire agreement along the Line of Control.
The Pahalgam massacre has evoked nationwide condemnation, with citizens holding protests across several cities, urging tougher diplomatic and strategic responses against Pakistan.
In response, the Centre has implemented multiple diplomatic measures. The Integrated Check Post at Attari has been closed with immediate effect, while the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals has been suspended. Pakistani citizens in India have been given 48 hours to return home.
"The Defence/Military, Naval and Air Advisors in the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi are declared Persona Non Grata. They have a week to leave India. India will withdraw its own Defence, Navy, and Air Advisors from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. These posts in the respective High Commissions are deemed annulled. Five support staff of the Service Advisors will also be withdrawn from both High Commissions," Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated.
He added that the Integrated Check Post at Attari would be shut immediately.
India has also put a hold on the Indus Waters Treaty signed in 1960, citing the grave provocation caused by the terrorist strike in Jammu and Kashmir.
