Days of Mamata Banerjee-led govt numbered, quips BJP

The BJP has accused Mamata Banerjee’s government of being "insensitive" to violence in West Bengal, especially in the wake of protests against the Waqf Amendment Act. BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad claimed the violence would escalate once central forces leave, signalling the end of Banerjee’s rule.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has alleged that Hindus are being subjected to targeted attacks in West Bengal, accusing the state police of allowing rioters to act with impunity. The allegations come in the wake of recent violence sparked by protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, which has led to the displacement of many, particularly in Murshidabad district.

BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad strongly criticised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, questioning whether her government had become "completely insensitive to basic human values." He claimed that the police had effectively given "free rein to rioters," and raised concerns that victims would face further violence once central forces, currently deployed under orders from the Calcutta High Court, leave the area.

"How low will you (Banerjee) stoop for vote bank... It is unacceptable," Prasad said, echoing the sentiments of many who believe that Banerjee’s policies are driven by political considerations rather than the welfare of the people. He also referenced the "Maa, Mati, Manush" slogan often used by Banerjee, asserting that she seemed to be concerned neither with "Maa" (mothers) nor "Manush" (people).

Prasad further claimed that the current situation in West Bengal is a sign that Banerjee's government is on the brink of collapse, stating, "The days of her government are numbered, and the BJP will continue to fight for people."

On the issue of the Waqf law, which Banerjee has firmly opposed, Prasad questioned whether the Chief Minister had an issue with the law’s provisions, especially those that benefit women and Pasmanda Muslims. He suggested that Banerjee’s stance against the Waqf law was politically motivated, further deepening the BJP's criticism of her leadership.
