A court in Delhi on Monday accepted the closure report filed by the Delhi Police, which asked to cancel a sexual harassment case against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The case was filed by a wrestler who was a minor at the time of the alleged incident.
Judge Gomti Manocha, an Additional Sessions Judge, said: "Cancellation accepted."
Earlier, during a private hearing on August 1, 2023, the minor girl had told a different judge that she was satisfied with the police investigation and had no objection to the case being closed. The Delhi Police filed the closure report on June 15, 2023, after the girl’s father admitted that he had made a false complaint against Singh. He said he did it out of anger, feeling that Singh had treated his daughter unfairly.
As a result, the police recommended dropping the case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. However, they have filed separate charges of sexual harassment and stalking against Singh in another case, based on complaints from six other women wrestlers.
In the minor’s case, police said there was no supporting evidence, which is why they requested to cancel it. The POCSO Act carries a minimum jail term of three years, depending on the charges. Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is also a former BJP Member of Parliament, has denied all allegations from the beginning.
