The Delhi Police on Monday refuted as false a viral social media post alleging that its personnel assaulted a woman shown as activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali Angmo, and injured 40-50 protesters, including a 12-year-old girl, during the “Chalo Sansad” protest in the national capital. The police also urged the public not to circulate misleading information.

 

The clarification came after Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) chief spokesperson Saurav Das claimed on X, “Geetanjali ji’s hair was pulled by Delhi Police and assaulted; a 12-year-old girl's head has been broken; 40-50 other heads were broken.”

 

The post questioned the police handling of the protesters. Responding to the allegations, Delhi Police issued a fact-check on X, rejecting the claims made in the viral posts and reiterating its appeal against sharing unverified information. “The claims being circulated in the posts are not true. Please do not spread or amplify false or misleading information,” it said.

 

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police, in a post on X, appealed to “all protesters to exercise restraint and cooperate with the police in maintaining peace and law and order”.

 

“All protesters are requested to conduct their demonstrations peacefully. They should not engage in any illegal or violent activities and must comply with the legal instructions given by police personnel deployed on duty,” it said.

 

“The public is advised not to believe or spread rumors, misinformation, or unverified information through any social media platforms. Citizens are requested to rely only on credible sources of information and to cooperate with the Delhi Police in maintaining peace, harmony, and law and order,” it added.

 

Thousands of protesters had gathered in central Delhi on Monday and tried to march towards Parliament, where they were stopped by the police with lathicharge and tear gas. The demonstrations, initially triggered by examination irregularities and paper leaks, gathered momentum after Wangchuk’s hunger strike.
